Article 3: How Does the Recycling Process Work and Why Does the Consumer Play a Role? (Video)

Beverage cartons are highly recyclable, but how exactly does the recycling process work? And what role do consumers play in it? To answer these questions, we spoke with Valerie Bruyninckx, Manager Communication and Engagement at Fost Plus. In a new video, she explains how beverage cartons are given a second life and why proper sorting is essential.

A beverage carton consists of approximately 75% paper fibre and 25% plastic and aluminium. The paper fibres are recycled into new cardboard packaging or tissues, while the polymers and aluminium (also known as PolyAl) are used to manufacture products such as interior furnishings, transport pallets, and crates. Recycling takes place at specialised recycling facilities in neighbouring countries.

Two factors are crucial for successful recycling: collection through Belgium’s Blue Bag system and correct sorting by consumers. Collection is organised through a door-to-door system, making Belgium one of Europe’s leaders in beverage carton recycling.

Proper sorting is an important first step in the recycling process. Beverage cartons can be sorted correctly in five simple steps: empty the carton, flatten it lengthwise, put the cap back on, place it in the Blue Bag, and consult bettersorting.be or the Recycle! app if you are unsure.
